There’s nothing like a backyard barbecue on a sweet summer night. For some towns, it’s a way of life – whether it’s year round or even for those precious months of good weather. Where do they do it best? 20 towns made the best of America list by online home goods retailer Wayfair:
1. Palm Coast, Florida
Sitting on the Atlantic coast, south of Jacksonville, Palm Coast is a charming town of about 75,000 residents. The love of outdoor spaces comes from the town’s variety of surroundings, including beaches, freshwater canals and marshes. Backyard aficionados enjoy year-round grillin’ and chillin’. Median home price (single-family): $180,100.
2. Barnstable (Cape Cod), Massachusetts
The Town of Barnstable is the largest community on Cape Cod. It’s everything you imagine about an idyllic town on the Cape, with a clam bake around every corner. This hardy crowd is known to frolic out back well into the fall and any decent spring day. Median home price of $340,100.
3. Atlantic City, New Jersey
A resort town with a bustling night life, the Vegas of the east coast is home to a pretty festive bunch. Locals love the Jersey Shore and everything about coastal life. Median home price: $122,900.
4. Stamford, Connecticut
A few minutes north of New York City on Long Island Sound, Stamford is home to the University of Conneticut (UConn). Locals love their gardens, arts, dancing, beer, bbq, seafood and wrestling (it’s home to the WWF). That pretty much means eclectic party crowds. Median home price: $436,250.
5. Napa, California

Miami life is steeped in Latin flair. Family is big, and friends are family. Hot humid weather means people enjoy the outdoors after dark. Think party lights and dancing. Median home price $291,800.
7. Ocean City, New Jersey
Southeast of Philly on a beautiful strip of the Atlantic sits a Cape May gem just minutes from (and a polar opposite of) Atlantic City. Dubbed “America’s Greatest Family Resort”, there’s a dedicated “family night” every Thursday. It’s actually a “dry” town, with no alcohol sold in the city (but you can get it nearby). Median home price: $355,000.
8. Sarasota, Florida
Award-winning beaches and golf mark this coastal town just south of Tampa. Locals and tourists love the artsy flair (it’s home to the Ringling Bros. Circus).
100,000 acres of subtropical protected wilderness means backyards are great places for birdwatching (check out the Bobolink at right, one of many colorful species). Median home price: $249,000, up 10 percent from last year (source: Zillow).
9. Naples, Florida
Naples combines sophistication and laid-back living on the Gulf Coast. Many homes back to the plentiful waterways, contributing to an active backyard-plus-dock lifestyle. Median home price: $432,400
